DTE Biomass Energy

Iredell Transmission, LLC (Statesville, NC)

Project Type:Power Generation
Start date:August 2008
Capacity:3.2 MW
Equipment:Two Caterpillar 3520 Engine Generators

The benefits

  • The federal government requires that landfills control their green house gas emissions. Our Iredell Transmission project helped our end-use utility customer successfully meet these requirements by designing, installing, operating and maintaining a wellfield at the landfill.
  • Iredell Transmission also supplies compliance operating reports to the county on behalf of the customer.
  • This green source of power enables the local utility to meet their renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements and offer a source of green power to their customers.
  • The Iredell Transmission project collects landfill gas from the Iredell County Landfill and destroys it through combustion in engines (producing electricity). This process generates enough electricity to power more than 3,000 homes.
  • The greenhouse gas emissions destroyed annually at the Iredell project are equivalent to removing the emissions from approximately 23,221 passenger vehicles* from the road each year.

Our role

DTE Biomass Energy works with many local county governments to help them realize their Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) goals set by their state. We leverage our knowledge of the state RPS goals to create projects where the locally generated renewable electricity from the county landfill stays at the local level to make the whole community greener.

We help county landfill owners to design, engineer, build and operate landfill gas recovery systems tailored to their individual situation. Our in-house expertise in engineering and project management enables us to design and install wellfields and engine projects. As with the Iredell project, our talents enable us to come in under budget and build projects on time. After projects are built, our skilled operations staff manage them to ensure their success.
