DTE Methane Resources

DTE Methane Resources (DTEMR) is a joint venture between two DTE Energy non-utility businesses, DTE Biomass Energy and DTE Coal Services. DTEMR is a niche operator in abandoned coal mine methane recovery with a unique blend of competencies.

The combined knowledge of closed and operational coal mines and the biomass energy market for direct gas and power sales places DTEMR in a unique position to expand its business into the Appalachian basin.

Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is a byproduct of the geological process that transforms organic material into coal. DTE Methane Resources projects. collect the methane gas in abandoned and operational coal mines for:

  • Direct low BTU gas sales - fuel for industrial processes
  • Produce steam - fuel for electricity power generation
  • Process gas at a cryogenic plant to meet pipeline quality

In Illinois a project reopened a gas processing plant, 23 local gas wells, 29-miles of pipeline, six compressor stations, and the mineral rights to approximately 60,000 acres of closed coal mines. To harvest the methane gas from the sealed mine, areas are identified that enable optimum gas retrieval. Wells are drilled 400 feet down, and the gas is pumped from the mine, processed at a cryogenic plant to meet pipeline quality then transport it to the interstate pipeline system for distribution to customers as a renewable source of energy.
